New Pizza Paddle

November 22, 2008

It arrived yesterday — our custom pizza paddle. It was packaged as if it were a newborn baby. I could have slammed the box on the ground and the paddle would have been safe.

It’s the Cadillac of pizza peels:

Making our slice-pies on a 24″ paddle was difficult. With this new 28″ paddle, it’s a piece of cake errrr, pie!

Look at the size difference of our current paddles and the new paddle:

The guy who made this paddle, Dave, has been awesome. He’s been in constant communication with us, and did an excellent job shaping and sanding the wood to create exactly what we needed.

THANK YOU, DAVE!!!

Check out his blog post on the final product here.

Pre-school Pizza Party

November 18, 2008

We had over a dozen pre-school kids show up yesterday morning (before we were open) for a field trip at Paizano’s. They were wearing the cutest ball caps, with a cut-out of a pizza slice that they had colored earlier in the day.

The troops marched into the kitchen and watched Whitey toss a Giant Pizza into one of our slice pies. We told them to pay close attention, as they were going to get to make their own pizzas in just a little bit.

After washing their tiny hands, they sat out in the dining room awaiting their mini pizza doughs.

We showed them how to smear the sauce, and to top the “red stuff” with cheese. They were having an absolute blast doing it.

After topping their pies, they lined up in the kitchen and had Whitey slide them into the oven to bake.

It only took a few minutes for these tiny pizzas to cook… and we delivered them to the expectant kids waiting in the dining room.

Have you ever seen cuter faces in your life? Kids are never happier than when there’s pizza in front of them.

After wrapping the leftovers to take home, the kids sang the “Pizza Song” for us, which I was able to get on video for your enjoyment as well….

The last line in the song are words to live by. :)

Food Show

November 18, 2008

A few weeks ado, I was able to attend the FSA food show in Nampa, Idaho. Our rep set us up with a hotel room for the night before so that we could get an early start on the day. The first 100 people who showed up were going to be given a pass to go in the Cash Machine, and we weren’t going to slack on that. :)

Whitey stayed behind to run the restaurant, and JC and I got in his truck and headed towards I-84.

As we neared the on-ramp, we noticed dozens and dozens of semi-trucks lining the side of the roads, so we pulled into a gas station to find out what was going on.

Corn. A semi pulling a huge trailer of corn cobs had tipped over, and so all lanes headed east-bound were closed. They were predicting a 4-hour delay.

Four hours? Heck no. We whipped out my laptop, pulled up trip-check, and saw that they were pin-pointing the accident somewhere else on the freeway. We then did a Google Satellite search to find another road around the freeway. After talking it over, we decided What The Heck? Let’s go for it!

We made our way to the other side of town and jumped on a rural road through farms, strange bridge overpasses, and absolute pitch darkness.

Our motto became, “We’re either geniuses, or absolute idiots.”

We were driving 50-miles out of the way to (hopefully) get around the accident, pop out onto the freeway, and be on our way. Read the rest of this entry »

Dual Challenge

November 18, 2008

The brothers came in, promising that we were about to lose a couple hundred bucks.

They had been in “training”, and they were both pretty certain that we were about to finally have winners for our Pizza Challenge.

I tried as best I could to dissuade them from ruining their night with indigestion, but they were pretty determined. Alrighty then….

(note Loran stretching in the background :) )

We set the timers, the brothers looked at each other, and they both took their first bite at the same time.

It was clear from the onset that Loran was going to out-eat Wade.

With almost 20-minutes left, it was obvious who was on-pace to win the contest. Loran was on the second-half of the pie, while Wade was struggling to finish his fourth slice. I finally convinced Wade that he wasn’t going to eat the second half of the pie in less than half the time, and he begrudgingly threw in the towel and shared the remnants.

The kitchen crew got word that we finally had a contendor, and they began lurking in the service station to watch the skinny dude wolf down his few remaining slices. Side bets began…

With 20-seconds left, Loran stood up and began chewing furiously. Read the rest of this entry »
